Steffi's Homemade Bread
Freshly baked, sometimes still warm, that’s how the bread arrives at the table at the Sonnenhof. A particular favorite among our guests: Steffi’s tomato bread, the recipe for which we’re sharing here so you can bake it at home.
Freshly baked at the Sonnenhof
Homemade bread
At the Sonnenhof, baking bread is simply part of the experience. In the kitchen, dough is kneaded, new ideas are tried out, and sometimes the aroma of freshly baked bread wafts through the entire house.
“The smell of fresh bread is just something special,” says Steffi. “And when you make it yourself, it tastes even better.”
In the evening, you’ll often find the bread at the buffet. Sometimes it’s a classic loaf, other times one with herbs or tomatoes.
The tomato bread is especially popular with our guests—crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and full of flavor.

Recipe from the Sonnenhof Kitchen
Tomato Bread
Ingredients
- 770 g flour
- 500 g strained tomatoes
- ¾ cube of yeast (approx. 30 g)
- 30 g olive oil
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- ¾ tsp basil
- ¾ tsp oregano
For brushing: a little water
Preparation
Line a loaf pan (approx. 12 × 30 cm) with parchment paper. Knead the flour, strained tomatoes, yeast, olive oil, salt, sugar, basil, and oregano into a dough.
On a floured work surface, shape the dough into a loaf about 30 cm long and place it in the loaf pan. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200 °C. Make three diagonal slashes in the bread, brush it with water, and bake for 25–30 minutes. Then remove it from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack.
