Tips for Bad Weather in the Zillertal

Rain is sometimes just part of life in the mountains. But that doesn’t mean you have to get bored at the Sonnenhof or in the Zell am Ziller area. There are plenty of activities right here at the hotel, and you can add other weather-proof excursion options depending on your age and interests.

Rainy-Day Activities
right at the Sonnenhof

When it rains, our guests don’t necessarily have to go on an outing. Families, in particular, will find plenty of ways to spend the day right here at the Ferienhotel Sonnenhof in Zell am Ziller.

For kids, there’s our indoor Ninja Warrior Park, where they can climb, balance, and tackle various obstacles. There’s also a playroom and a separate area for teenagers featuring billiards, foosball, table tennis, and air hockey, among other things.

A day at the pool works no matter the weather: Our panoramic indoor pool features floor jets, massage jets, and a counter-current system. There’s also a children’s pool and a hot tub.

Indoor Tennis and Bowling in Zell am Ziller

If you want to stay active despite the rain, you’ll find options right in Zell am Ziller.

The Zell Leisure Park features an indoor tennis facility with three courts as well as a bowling alley with four lanes. This makes the leisure park ideal not only for summer days outdoors but also for activities that aren’t dependent on the weather.

For our guests, this is a convenient option when the rain lingers but they still want to stay active throughout the day.

Zillertal Adventure Dairy in Mayrhofen

A particularly great destination for families is the Zillertal Adventure Dairy in Mayrhofen.

At the demonstration dairy, visitors learn how Zillertal hay milk is turned into cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products. The tour is self-guided with an audio guide. Tasting stations are also part of the experience.

The demonstration dairy and the demonstration farm are currently open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for tours. Advance registration is not required for individual guests.

This makes the Zillertal Adventure Dairy one of our top recommendations for families who want to learn about the Zillertal and local agriculture even when the weather is bad.

FeuerWerk in Fügen

A little further up the valley, the FeuerWerk in Fügen is a great option for inclement weather that explores a completely different topic.

This interactive exhibition focuses on wood, forests, energy, and sustainability. Multimedia elements and films demonstrate, among other things, how wood is processed and used to generate energy.

This outing is especially suitable if you’d like to combine a rainy day with an informative program.

Natur Ice Palace on the Hintertux Glacier

A more extraordinary destination is the Natural Ice Palace on the Hintertux Glacier. Inside the glacier, the tour takes visitors through a natural ice world featuring ice formations and a glacial lake.

Important: The entrance is located at an altitude of 3,250 meters and can be reached via the Hintertux Glacier Cable Cars. Allow about 45 minutes for the ascent. In case of strong winds or unfavorable conditions on the mountain, you should therefore check in advance whether the cable cars are operating as usual.
