The Zillertal with a Stroller
Even with a baby or toddler, the Zillertal is easy to explore on foot. Around the Ferienhotel Sonnenhof in Zell am Ziller and in the surrounding mountains, there are several trails that are specifically suitable for strollers.
The Spruce Trail
on the Rosenalm
Our tip for families who want to head up the mountain with a stroller: the Fichtenwelt Rosenalm. The Rosenalmbahn’s valley station is just a four-minute walk from the Ferienhotel Sonnenhof.
The Spruce Trail starts at the mountain station; it’s an easy loop trail suitable for strollers. It’s about 2.3 kilometers long, and the entire loop takes about an hour to walk.
Along the way, you’ll pass the Spruce Castle and Spruce Lake. This makes it easy to combine the hike with play and swimming breaks. If you need extra storage space for snacks, clothing, or tired children, you can also rent a handcart at the mountain station.
Especially with younger children, the combination of a short gondola ride, an easy loop trail, and several interactive stations makes this one of the best family outings around the Ferienhotel Sonnenhof, in our opinion.
Zillerpromenade
in Zell am Ziller
For an easy stroll, the Ziller Promenade right in Zell am Ziller is the perfect choice. The official loop trail is about 3.5 kilometers long, takes roughly one hour to complete, and has an elevation gain of only about ten meters. The trail is also suitable for families with strollers.
Those who want to extend their walk can continue along the promenade beside the Ziller River. From Zell am Ziller, it’s about four kilometers to Hippach and about eight kilometers to Mayrhofen. Bridges cross to the other side of the river at regular intervals, so you can easily adjust the length of your walk.
For our guests at the Ferienhotel Sonnenhof, the Ziller Promenade is ideal for a short morning stroll, a walk after a meal, or a peaceful day of vacation with a stroller.
Gourmet Loop Trail
at Ahorn in Mayrhofen
Another stroller-friendly mountain trail awaits at the Ahorn near Mayrhofen.
Take the Ahornbahn up to the Ahorn Plateau. There, the stroller-friendly “Genießer Rund Weg” (Leisure Loop Trail) winds across the plateau and leads to several scenic overlooks. The AhornSee and the AhornBachl are also located along the loop trail.
This tour is particularly convenient for families because it combines mountain views with an easily accessible trail. Handcarts can also be borrowed for free at the mountain station, subject to availability.
Mayrhofen is easily accessible from Zell am Ziller, making it a great addition to the stroller-friendly trails right around the Ferienhotel Sonnenhof.
Panorama Loop Trail
on the Penken
There’s also a trail on the Penken near Mayrhofen that’s specifically designed for strollers. The PanoramaRundWeg leads from the upper station of the Kombibahn Penken toward the Penkenjoch and on to the upper station of the Penkenbahn. Along the way, you’ll find various lookout points as well as family-friendly and recreational activities on the mountain.
For this tour, we recommend an all-terrain stroller with good tires. Especially on mountain trails, it’s much more comfortable to push than a small city stroller.

along the Ziller River to the Sidan floodplain
Those who prefer to stay in the valley can combine a walk along the Ziller River with a visit to the Auenland Sidan in Schwendau.
This large adventure playground is located right next to the Zillertal Bike Trail and covers about 3,000 square meters. For children, there are sand and water play areas, swings, slides, climbing structures, and a treehouse, among other things.
Especially when older siblings are along, this is a great way to combine a stroll with a stroller with a longer play break.
Is it possible to go hiking with a stroller in the Zillertal?
Yes. There are several trails in the Zillertal that are specifically designed to be stroller-friendly. These include the Zillerpromenade in Zell am Ziller, the Fichtenweg on the Rosenalm, the GenießerRundWeg on the Ahorn, and the Panorama Rund Weg on the Penken.

Which stroller is best for mountain trails?
For mountain and gravel trails, we recommend an all-terrain stroller or outdoor buggy with larger tires and good suspension.
