Zillertal Railway

Zillertal Railway

The Zillertal Railway runs from Jenbach through the Ziller Valley to Mayrhofen. It is a private, narrow-gauge (760 mm) railway, serving nowadays as local transportation, a tourist attraction and as transportation for lumber.

Aside from a fleet of modern diesel locomotives, the Zillertal Railway also has several steam locomotives used to take tourists on delightful rides through the surrounding countryside. Freight transportation is made possible through standard-gauge freight cars loaded onto roll-block cars.

In Jenbach, the railway connects with the Westbahn, a standard-gauge  railway which runs from Vienna via Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck to Bregenz. Also in Jenbach, it connects to the  Achenseebahn, a one-metre gauge cog railway. Jenbach is the only town in Austria where three different gauges intersect.
